MARKET NEWS #03 2023

Market Manager

We’re in for 26 degrees on Sunday.

The forecast is for eggs sunny side up. If you can’t find them elsewhere, get yours from the Farmers’ Market. There will be plenty of bacon from Long Acre farm to go with it. Georgina from Koromiko Free Range eggs recommends bacon and egg pie - delicious, irresistible, and a Kiwi favourite. We’ve got a recipe link for you at the bottom of this newsletter.

While it’s the season for stone fruit (delicious early season pears, and sweet plums), figs and berries, a few lemons also popped up at the market last week. Andrew from Frut4U will be over with the last two crates. Grab yourself some lemons at last year’s prices. Feedback was that they are much cheaper than elsewhere!

Check out this handful - a 200g spectacular Grosse Longue Verte the very first one Kathy has captured in her four seasons at Mangarua.

Who will be attending?

One of our newest stallholders attending is Cachito, meaning “a little bit” in Spanish. Mariana from Cachito brings you a “little bit” of Mexico on your Sunday mornings at the market.

Mariana says “we bring from home the taste of our culture, the warmth of our people and the experience of our ingredients that can only be found in a Mexican kitchen. It is our pleasure to share with you the textures, flavours and colours of our country, celebrating the quality of Marlborough’s produce and our traditional processes that makes this cuisine something unique and irreplaceable.

“Here we cook with love, passion and devotion. Here every plate has a “Cachito” of our hearts.”

Take a peek on our website homepage, to see which stalls will be attending the following day. We update this page on Saturdays.

From our stallholders

Garden bees

There are medium and small honey bears and tasty honey straws.

If you haven’t tried the straws yet, they are filled with honey, ideal for a quick honey fix with the right amount for your cup of tea, coffee or turmeric latte.

Kids love the straws instead of lollies, great in school lunches and ideal for sports or active people.

There’s also still time to grab a bargain. We still have 1 kg pots honey for $15.00, excludes honey dew and manuka.

Thanks, Kevin

Golden Mile Produce

Some like it hot! Golden Mile Produce is picking the first of the jalapeños and big long green chillies. Don't let their size deceive you...our quality heat tasters (a.k.a Boom chef) say the new big green chilli have a nice splash of heat profile.

Come and try for yourself. And we still have plenty of delicious strawberries, courgettes, cherry tomatoes (check out the beautiful colours!), red onions, pickled onions and the ever popular strawberry conserve.

Windsong Orchard

It’s mid-season for the huge range of organic plums at Windsong Orchard’s stall and the ever-popular Luisa makes its appearance. The plum that even people who don’t like plums love, sweet and juicy with no tart skin. Try some at the sampling table this Sunday.New Paragraph

SharpAs Tool Tip

Here are two knives; one of which appears to be a Damascus, multi-layered knife. Close inspection under a magnifying glass shows the layering is actually a type of image put onto the surface. It’s still a good knife but not an expensive one. Something to beware of when buying online.

If you have any knives, garden equipment, kitchen utensils, or anything else that needs an edge, come and see me at the Farmers’ Market.

Cheers, Ron

Recipe of the week

A kiwi favourite, and handy for lunches, brunch and dinner. With the long weekend coming up, also great to feed a crowd and enjoyed at a picnic by the sea, atop a mountain, in a boat or next to a swimming hole.

Check out the great bacon and egg pie by eggs.org.
