In season is the cabbage. It is part of the same family as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi and Brussels sprouts. While kale, brussels sprouts and even cauliflower seem to get more of the love in my house at least, cabbage is a vegetable truly worth our attention. A head of cabbage stores well and can be used in many ways.

Aside from the classic coleslaw summer side dish, you can add variation by chopping it into a cabbage salad with nuts and cheese. The crunchy leaves are also good for topping sandwiches. Add hummus, sprouts, left over and egg and roll up a leaf.

To turn this brassica into a stunning side or main course, whether you use Savoy, red or white cabbage, brussels sprouts or pak choi, follow this link and never be short of a recipe to use up a whole cabbage. Our recipe of the week is a Vegetable Frittata, using your leftovers. Please enjoy.

Come and see what other goodness our stall holders are bringing you from the farm gate to your dinner plate.

Take a look at the Life Education Trust - Food for Life Cookbook

The recipes in this uniquely Marlborough cookbook are from some of our region's best food producers, eateries and wineries. 'Food for Life' has recipes from some of the markets regular stall holders. It also has recipes from Two Raw Sisters and a Kids Can Cook section with chef Chris Fortune.

“We feature Marlborough’s extremely talented chefs and great businesses with interesting stories”, says Life Education Trust’s fundraising and events manager Tasha Knox. “This cookbook is a celebration of our region. It’s totally unique, – there’s nothing else like it.”

The Life Education Trust relies solely on fundraising, sponsorship and grants to run its education programme.

“All proceeds from this cookbook will help us continue to deliver our programme to local schools, says Tasha. “Our interactive mobile classroom visits schools across Marlborough, Kaikoura and Murchison. With the help of Harold the Giraffe, Life Education helps young people build their identities and make positive choices.”

Tasha will be at the market. Come and have a chat to her this Sunday and take a copy of the book away.

“This cookbook has been a labour of love and I’m so happy with it. It's really beautiful and full of really cool locals that were more than happy to help us out and contribute a recipe or two.”

Tasha comes to the market often to purchase whatever fruit and vegetable is in season. “Lately it's been cauliflower and apples. I can't wait for the strawberries and watermelon”, she says. “I'm always impressed with the freshness and prices of the produce.”

“It's not just the fresh produce - it's the good coffee, yummy breakfasts and great vibe that I like. I always buy my Christmas presents from the market to take home up north for the family, there's lots of good Marlborough stuff to buy and I love to show this region off.

The Life education trust is a charity that empowers young people. “Our interactive mobile classroom visits schools across Marlborough, Kaikoura and Murchison. With the help of Harold the Giraffe, Life Education helps young people build their identities and make positive choices”, says Tasha.

‘Food for Life’ is just $39 with all proceeds going to Life Education Trust Marlborough so we can continue to deliver our programme to local schools. To purchase make sure that you visit the community stall this Sunday.

SharpAs Tool Tip

I had a request from a customer if I could turn a butcher’s knife into a universal knife for the smaller jobs in the kitchen. So many small knives have small uncomfortable handles. As requested I was able to shape the handle and fit it to the client’s hand.

Have you noticed how comfortable a branch can feel when you pick one up on your walks. The human hand is more comfortable with an irregular surface than a straight plain surface, and I worked to achieve that feeling on this custom handle. The customer was very happy with the result.

If you have a handle that needs fixing or any tools that need sharpening come and see me at the Redwood Market on Saturday or the Marlborough Farmers' Market on Sunday - or contact me direct, Txt is best.

cheers Ron

Recipe of the week – Vegetable Frittata

This week Margaret Duggan from Traditional Country Preserves shares her recipe.

It is a Vegetable Frittata with plenty of protein. I made it mainly from left-overs in my fridge.

Heat 1 Tablespoon of oil in a large fry pan, add 1 cup finely diced Kumara or potato and cook until soft.

Add 100g of finely cut mushrooms, 1 finely diced onion or cut chives, plus 1 cup of other vegetables of your choice. Cook till all heated and add a good handful of Pinoli Pine nuts.

Pour into an oven proof dish. Whisk 4 free range eggs with ½ teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of Homemade.Kiwi’s green vegetable stock.

Pour over contents of oven proof dish and crumble 2/3 of a block of Cranky goat Feta over this plus 2 good handfuls of grated hard cheese.

Cook in oven until it starts to brown and crisps around the edges. Serves 2 people or reheat ½ the next day. Can serve with peas or beans.

Most of these products can be purchased at the Farmers Market from the growers or the information stall.

Enjoy
